Anti-virus: ZoneAlarm
Anti-spyware: ZoneAlarm
Firewall: ZoneAlarm and the external firewall of the cable modem
Other than that it's just common sense, and Firefox with Adblock Plus (I need to get NoScript too but the only time I remember it I'm busy or stopping for the night).
Haven't gotten a single virus in over 4 years and the only spyware I've gotten is tracking cookies, which are scanned for and deleted every couple days. Only downside to it is on my older computers if it updated while I was playing a game it was use too much of the CPU, which fortunately is no longer a problem with this computer but overall it's less of a resource hog than the last couple AV's we tried (can only remember the name of one of them, which pathetically enough was Norton's... we used it for 3-4 years and every year it used more resources and got more cluttered and useless, when we changed to ZoneAlarm there was a ridiculous amount of crap that was caught and deleted.)

I don't use an anti-viures, viruses are easy to avoid.
I would recommend Kaspersky Internet Security Suite though. Especially if you're looking for high grade protection.

I allways wonder how people get to viruses... I only had one in my whole computer experience. (And I never had my computer "protected" by something...)

For my anti-virus I've always used AVG free and I've never had a virus. For Spyware I used Spybot Search and Destroy.

voila, your computer infected tomorrow ..
just for advice .. better check your com's health daily or weekly .. no one know there are viruses or somewhat in it .. using antivirus won't hurt
OT :

Same here. But I have Malware Anti-Bytes(?) for scans. Avast takes forever.

Used Avira Anti-Vir and Spybot Search and Destroy with Adaware-SE sometimes. But after switching to Linux, I haven't had to use these... yet.

I have Norton 360 antivirus and firewall. I have used Norton products 4-5 years and works fine!
My fried used Avast but it messed up his computer because it deleted some important files.

Well. It does take time. And disc space. And cpu load. And nerves. Atleast if you use some of these paranoid AntiVirus tools which are running all the time, ask if something want to do something, etc. Every week some checks, thats ok. But more is paranoia I think.

If you're not protected by anti-virus and a firewall, you will never know if you are infected. Many viruses now a days only use your computer to spam others, so you may never know that you are infected.
In short, no matter how good you are doing, you wont know if you are infected if you do not run some anti-virus and monitor your out going connections.

That flaws can be repaired by maintain your comp's performance well ..
and using some low-memory usage antivirus of course ..
And like Jenslyn said ..

So better using it .. just an advice
sacrifice a bit of performance for comp's guard/health is okay enough ..
