i don't really have to worry about antivirus stuff since im using ubuntuif i was using wine i would worry more but i don't even have wine installed
You get rep for using Ubuntu! lol
Haha, Hibia uses Gentoo.
YOUR MOTHER USES GENTOO!
-gestures to his Slackware 12.1 installs- I went back because I don't have any ArchLinux disks. That reminds me, I have to download those when I dial into work next... I'm typing on the keyboard of my laptop which is runnin' Slackware 12.1 and KDE 3.5. Should probably update to 4 sometime...
Anyway, Ubuntu isn't all that great. Claiming to be leet uber hax because you use Ubuntu is like claiming you are a genius because you can correctly operate a blender without removing your fingers.
And at that first joker, Wine wouldn't effect your Linux operating system. The only changes would be to the Windows applications or the wine install. The only way it could effect you is if it was intentionally designed to harm a Linux system running Wine or you were running as root and it mistakenly changed something. Oh, and you will break your OS if you walk in with the idea "It's Linux, there can't be any virus-like applications for such an uncommon OS!". You'll run a rm -rf / script someday as root because someone said it was the fix for your wireless card. -pulls a thumbs up- Good job.
This seriously made me lol, also with regards to the forum, I don't use any. Granted I barely touch my XP box, I use Archlinux, nuff said.

its not so much wine but having the windows api ready and waiting for something to screw it up, like something always seems to. and its sudo rm -rf /

its not so much wine but having the windows api ready and waiting for something to screw it up, like something always seems to. and its sudo rm -rf /Actually, I assumed you were stupid enough to run as root from your statements. Wine is pretty nice and it can only interface with "Z:\" which is just ~/.wine/drive_c generally. Unless you modify it to intentionally use other parts of your hard drive and/or the program was still designed to attack a Linux run system, you still won't effect you in a way that a restart of your window manager couldn't fix. Any corruption after killing it would be much the same as kill -9'ing any other process that was running natively. Plus, it's not "the" Windows API. "Rather than acting as a full emulator, Wine implements a compatibility layer, providing alternative implementations of the DLLs that Windows programs call, and processes to substitute for the Windows NT kernel." Alternates. You can implement real DLLs from a Windows OS, but you don't need to, and it's not too easy too.
I was also implying that your operating system != the amount of viruses. The reason Linux has less perceived viruses is because the user isn't running with enough privileges to fuck their system up and because normally people who use it need a bit more common sense to get it up and running. Those kind of people who are intelligent enough not to run/download any old crap.
Although there was an attempt to create a problem in the Linux kernel by changing a != to = when checking for root in a certain core element, making a root shell whenever the function is called. It looked like a simple C fuckup, but it was an intentional break. You see, you are not protected if something as simple as that slipped through the cracks [a dev picked it up].
Read up before making unfounded statements.

Virus Scanner: Avira (only because family is using this machine too)
why Avira? because it's free and so much better than Avast or AVG (AVG has become crap with V8 too much of a system hogger now)
for paid version I would say Kaspersky
Firewall: my router with everything closed. It has like 8 ports open continuously the rest all temporary
Browser: FF 3 + adblock plus and noscript (basically removed explorer entirely try to use explorer for a website and it hops too FF :) )

AVG 8.0 is what I use for Anti-virus. As for Anti-spyware, I use [and REALLY recommend people try this] Threatfire. It is only around a year old, and it is completly endorsed by MaximumPC. It uses VERY little system resources, doesn't ask you to update every four seconds, and defends against spyware better than a crapload of $50.00 programs. Oh, did I mention it is FREE? Well, that's what I use. If anyone is looking for new spyware protection, give Threatfire a whirl. If you don't end up liking it then get rid of it. -AT9-

No need for this stuff. I have iTunes on my Windows partition and the bare presence of Apple software of any kind makes all the viruzez go weeee. But occasionally, when I'm feeling especially paranoid, I wrap my computer case in garlic, just in case. On a more serious note, just the basic IP and Port control - and Spybot for browser immunization. Intelligence is the best form of security.

Like only a few people above, I use Avira AntiVir.
Its free and except for the annoying updates, seems to work.

I actually use absolutely no security. No virii protection, no spyware/adware protection, no firewall, aside from my routers hardware firewall. However I VERY rarely get anything malicious on my system. I use Opera, and I torrent out the ass, but still manage to stay safe. I think it's pretty easy to stay secure without any security as long as you play it smart.

Lol why? You should know the internet isn't full of crazy hackers who are out to get you, the few who know what they're doing rarely bother with anyone, and I find the best security is common sense, and the ability to monitor your own network.
Paranoid people sheesh.

Mmm, people who know anything about breaking into systems already do it for a living with security auditing. The other ones are generally skiddies who wouldn't be able to do much anyway, unless you were dumb enough to install some random software.
I find that you're right. Common sense and advanced computer knowledge will save you 8/10 times. User error can be the other one and the last will be external/physical malicious activity.
I can salvage my system when it's hit by some pesky BHOs. Can you?
