I just beat this game in hardcore mode over the weekend. The final boss was quite the challenge. But after figuring out on how to beat him he was no problem. I keep'd shooting him in the face with the help of TURBO and it brought his health down like crazy. After he was a really low health i put on the "Ballistic Fist" and punched him and i yelled out "shoryuken" for the final blow. I blew his helmet right off. I still have to beat the game again for the other 3 endings. You know, I just realized something. I've never once finished the story of a fallout game. Sure, I got to the original ending of Fallout 3, but I never finished Broken Steel. And for New Vegas, I spent most of my time doing side-missions and collecting weapons and armor. Then I got Rage and completely stopped playing F:NV due to me being a complete id fanboy. Hell, I didn't even know there was a "final boss" in New Vegas until just now.
What really every fallout game has a final boss battle, hell New Vegas has 2 of them
What exactly in fallout can be called a boss battle? When I classify a boss battle, I think of an atypical enemy that you won't see amung the other canon fodder that populate the game. Usually, they also have a unique or powerful weapon, are usually a good deal larger than you, and can take a LOT more damage than the aforementioned canon fodder. Obvious (i.e. glowing) weakspots are optional but commonplace. Oh, and the enemy having a health bar constantly on display usually helps to designate them as a boss.
The Master from Fallout 1. Frank Horrigan from Fallout 2. The Calculator from Tactics. Fallout 3 really doesn't now that I think about. The Legate Lanius from fallout New Vegas. I was going to say General Oliver but he is like Autumn from fallout 3
There is this one boss from the DLC of fallout 3. I forgot the name of it but its some Chinese general who can be a bitch to kill unless you have high speech skills which can make commit suicide.
General Jingxai or something like that

You mean the guy that had the shocksword on Operation Achorage? I killed his ass pretty fucking easy, so I didn't really think of him as being special. Then again, I was pretty high-leveled by the time I got around to playing the DLCs for Fallout 3. I still don't really consider much in Fallout to qualify as bosses. Sure, there are some NPCs that have higher health and armor than most enemies, but they're hardly a boss battle. All it takes at that point is just the right equipment and a high enough skill level to take them out before they can do much damage. As it is, I'll just call them either special or heavy units.
If you wanna see what I mean when I talk about boss battles, take a look at any id game for an example. Idunno, I guess I just have a higher standard or an old-school view on the matter.

an "Ultimate Edition" is coming out (not GotY since they didn't get the title for it)
February 7th, 2012 in North America and February 10th, 2012 in Europe.
Awesome box art as well

So I started a new playthrough today and I'm trying out hardcore mode for the first time. It's a little easier than I thought but I gotta get used to the no insta-health with stimpacks. Anyone one else have trouble the first time trying hardcore mode?

I played hardcore mode the first time I started the game.
Just had to take more conditions in mind.
at first it was hard but after a while it just became a nuisance to me.
Then I quickly played trough the story so I could get that achievemnt and started a new playtrough without hardcore. much more fun to mess around with things.

So I'm trying to get Lucky Shades without making the NCR hate me. I stole about 50 NCR dogtags... about 50 gets you liked by the Legion... however you can only get the Lucky shades after you meet Caesar.
My question is... What companions leave when I affiliate with the legion? At what point do they leave?
edit:
Found this video on youtube... sad story bro...
Soilers so watch out
dunno if this been posted yet

I think Boone is the only one that will leave since he is ex-NCR
though I didn't recruit him during my Legion playtrough so I don't fully know

I know he leaves or tries to kill you if you get bad NCR rep... but does boone or that scientist guy leave if I get liked by the legion?

What would a decent first-time Fallout build be? I played through 1 and 2, but 3 never held my interest enough to learn the nuances. I was thinking a split between speech/guns and whatever healing stats there are.

You really need everything, maybe not luck...

Thanks! I played up until Primm with random specialties/perks, only to find out that Science is pretty much useless considering what all I want to do. I think I'm going to focus more on projectile more than energy weapons, maybe work on making a Legion soldier playthrough like I did with Fallout 2.

Lvl up lockpick in the beginning and speech then Science.
And try to find a hunting rifle!
Also find vargas and get the quest "Come Fly With Me"
for achievement! (if you're playing on xbox)
Did you pick the Wild wasteland trait?

Did you pick the Wild wasteland trail?
I'm playing on Steam (PC), the Extended edition with all the DLC and weapon packs. I take it Wild Wasteland trail is DLC?

Do this and you'll be fine.
See if you can go to Camp McCarran as soon as possible to get the unmarked quest "Dealing with Contreras" when you complete that quest you'll get This machine which is one of the games best guns!
And try to get to Hidden valley with Veronica (you can find her here 188 Trading Post, if you find her first you'll skip the first quest, the first quest doesn't give you anything and minmum Xp)
Best weapons
Dinner bell, you'll have to complete this quest "Bleed Me Dry", try to get this quest as soon as possible (the quest is hard as shit but you can get it automatically while playing).
Alien Blaster or the YCS, you can find only find Alien blaster if you have the "Wild Wasteland" activated or else YCS will be at the same location.
Euclid Finder you can buy this gun for like 100 caps but it's worthless with out completing That Lucky Old Sun and choosen this option in the end "4. ARCHIMEDES II: This solution diverts power to the next-generation space laser system mentioned in the terminal notes and will give the player the option of calling down space-laser strikes once every twenty four hours (Patch Update), provided the player has also obtained Euclid's C-Finder. The Followers are satisfied with this option, as Ignacio Rivas does not know the location to which the power has been diverted. However, Ignacio will not give you a Big Book of Science as part of your reward."
Edit* no the wild wasteland is a trait, you'll choose 2 traits (or non)in the beginning.
Do not start any Dlc yet wait til' you're al least Lvl 20!
I can't believe i'm making a walkthrough to Fallout: NV on fakku!

Thanks for all the help. And yeah, I figured most of the DLC would be near end-game stuff, so I stayed away from it.

No, they don't give any spoilers on the end nor do they end the game when you complete them.
They're just hard as shit!
Espesically Dead Money but Dead money is also the best Dlc to Fallout: NV, in my opinion.
